The environment and the structure of a team affect how it works and performs and ultimately the outcome of its activities and the satisfaction of its members. Self-Directed Team A characteristic of the SPITS teams at ACME Co. is that they are self-directed teams. The characteristics that qualify SPITS as such are: • Include employees with several skills and functions • Given access to various resources • Is empowered with decision making authority Team Member Roles For a team to be effective and successful the members social well being must be maintained and the tasks that the team set to achieve must be accomplished. Team members can exhibit two different behaviors: • Task specialist role o Initiate ideas o Give opinions o Seek information o Summarize o Energize • Socio-emotional role o Encourage o Harmonize o Reduce tension o Follow o Compromise Team members can posses and perform a different amount of these two roles and as such be categorized in four broad groups.
